Self Drive Car Rental in Goa: Documents, Costs to Check & Driving Tips
Renting a self-drive car is one of the best ways to see Goa, if you know what to expect. Here is what to carry, how to choose a car and what to watch for on the road.
What you need to rent a car
You will typically need a valid driving licence, a government photo ID and a local contact number. International visitors can drive with a valid international driving permit alongside their home licence. Rental companies normally take a refundable security deposit; confirm the amount and return conditions in your quote.
Choosing a car
Goa's village lanes and beach-road parking are tight, so smaller is easier.
- Hatchback: best for couples and solo travellers, easy to park.
- Sedan: comfortable for small families, with space for luggage.
- MUV or SUV: for groups and families, and for rougher roads.
- Luxury: for occasions and long highway drives.
Driving tips for Goa
- Carry your original licence, ID and the car's papers. Police checks are common, especially in peak season.
- Plan beach and market visits earlier in the day. Evening traffic around Calangute, Baga and Panjim is heavy.
- Use offline maps. Network can be patchy in villages, and many lanes are narrow and unmarked.
- Do not drive on beaches, and park only in marked spots.
- Avoid unlit village roads at night and watch for scooters, stray animals and sudden turns.
- Never drink and drive. Use a taxi for nights out.
Self-drive vs taxi
Self-drive gives freedom and often saves money on multi-day trips. A taxi with a driver is easier for airport transfers, long outstation drives and nights out. Many visitors do both: a taxi from the airport and a self-drive car for the days in between.
